Who are we: Safety first Education & Training (SFE&T) is one of the subsidiaries/divisions of Hoj Engineering and Sales company, Inc.
Our Purpose: “The purpose of Safety first Education & Training is to train and empower businesses, companies, institutions and employees of those organizations with a profound sense of responsibility to recognize and prevent injuries from occurring to all who work for and with them”.
History: The Education division was created in 1990 in response to customer requests for Compliance Training and Industrial Truck Operator (Forklift) Certification. Because of Hoj Engineering’s national recognition as a crane engineering company, immediately requests were made to include Overhead Crane courses including Operator Training, Inspector Training and Rigging Training.
Because of Hoj’s recognition, Professional Crane Programs expanded and today are produced all over the U.S..
By 1997 the focus was clear. Under the direction of Henning Hoj, President of Hoj engineering and Roy Funk, Hoj engineering’s Director of Safety, it was decided that the training department required a separate identity. The name chosen to differentiate training from engineering was “Safety first Education & Training”.
To meet the growing demand for safety education, Henning purchased a building on the east side of 500 West (3997), directly across the street from the engineering offices which was renovated as a Professional Training Center. By 2000, Safety first Education & Training’s education curriculum had grown to encompass professional training in most of the 1910 General Industry Standards along with s some the 1926 Construction Standards. Roy Funk, who originally created the education division at Henning’s request, would become the Managing director of the Division.
In 2004, Roy read an article in a national crane magazine which stated, the “International Powered Access Federation (IPAF)”, based in Europe, was opening an office in Pennsylvania. IPAF was then and is even more so today, the world’s leading authority in the field of training and safety for “Aerial Work Platforms” (Powered Access Equipment in Europe). The Article stated that IPAF determined that it was time to bring the world’s premier training program to North America. To differentiate the name in North America was changed to “American Work Platform Training, Inc., (AWPT Inc)”, because in North America they are Aerial work Platforms, not Powered Access Platforms.
Upon reading the article, Henning and Roy called IPAF’s office in Pennsylvania to find out how they could become an AWPT/IPAF Training Center. Following numerous conversations and meeting specific professional criteria, Roy funk and Toodie West were trained by AWPT as IPAF instructors during the third quarter of 2004. following licensing as IPAF Instructors, Hoj Engineering / Safety first Education & Training received approval as the first Operating, IPAF/AWPT Training Center in the United States. The internationally accepted. “Powered Access License” or “PAL Card” could now be issued to Aerial Work Platform Operators in the United States.
Please visit www.awpt.org and www.ipaf.org for information on this world class education.
Today, Safety First education & Training (SFE&T) is acknowledged as a premier professional training company in the field of “Occupational Health and Safety”. One reason for SFE&T’s success and recognition is their commitment to produce education courses to the highest professional standard. One immediately notices that very few videos are used in their courses and then, only to enforce specific areas of importance. They actually teach! All at SFE&T was lead education courses are Safety Engineers and/or Safety and Health Professionals.
